Pet Accidents on Carpet: What to Do First

It happens in every pet household sooner or later. What you do in the first few minutes makes the biggest difference to whether the mark — and the smell — becomes permanent.

Act fast, blot — never rub

Scoop up solids, then press a clean white towel or cloth firmly onto the area. Stand on it if you need to; weight draws moisture up out of the pile. Work from the outside edge toward the centre so the spot does not spread, and keep rotating to a clean section of cloth. Rubbing frays fibres and drives the mess deeper.

Rinse, then dry

Dampen the area lightly with plain water and keep blotting. This dilutes what is left in the fibres. Avoid drenching the carpet — excess water can reach the backing and underlay. Finish by weighting a dry towel over the spot for an hour, then let air circulate.

Skip the risky home remedies

Bleach, harsh disinfectants, and very hot water can set stains permanently or strip colour from carpet. Supermarket enzyme cleaners can help with fresh marks, but always test somewhere hidden first — and never mix products.
